Getting Ready to Read Chapter Books This is an analogy to use with your students when getting them to be willing to try chapter books....
Bring in an apple...tell the students that you are so hungry and if they
didn't mind if you ate a snack really quick. Then attempt to put the apple
completely in your mouth. Of course this doesn't work. They laugh and then ask
them what are you doing wrong. They explain that you have to take bites. Then
go into an explanation that they have to do the same with chapter books. At
first it looks really big and you think you need to finish it it one sitting,
but if you take small bites (read one chapter at a time) you will eventually
finish it!
Silly I know! BUT, it helps a lot of students visually see what they are to
do!
