Make a list for your kids before school starts! Make your calendar, it could be something like "August Favorites" with the directions under the title. "In a notebook write about your favorite/least favorite thing and tell why it's your favorite. Bring your notebook with you on your first day of school to share with your classmates."

It also might be a good idea to have a sample of your own writing. Something like, "My favorite school day is the first day of school. My classroom is ready, I'll meet my new students, and I know we will learn many new things together this year. The only bad thing is, I won't be able to sleep late!"
