Personal Narrative
Isoke Nia suggests that we call personal narrative personal story, in that
it is told in the first person and based on actual experience (hence
personal) and that it is a story (has the narrative elements), so personal
story. Memoir is more. Personal essay includes narrative elements (uses
story to further a point of vie, belief, etc.) but it is more. In our
district, one of our spiralsı in the writing curriculum is personal
story--->memoir---->personal essay, because we believe that teaching
through
the spiral (first and second with personal story, third and fifth with
memoir, 8th and 12th with personal essay) we can build upon the
understanding that each genre study will build.
